Movies: Best and Worst of 2006

I ahven't updated in long while...

Of course the list would probably be different if i had seen all the movies 2006 had to offer... notably the late and limited releases of movies like Children of Men. I've missed out on so many good movies this year... now i have to wait till they come out on DVD. Until then here is my list.

Best of 2006.

1. The Departed (Regarding the oscars I feel that this is the year for Scorsese)
2. Little Miss Sunshine
3. Casino Royale (Exacly what the franchise needed)
4. V for Vendetta
5. Borat
6. Flags of our Fathers (I have yet to see the Better half)
7. The Illusionist (Prestige would probably take its place if i had seen it)
8. Lucky Number Slevin
9. Cars (The year hasnt been very good for animated films but Pixars still manages to create something special)
10. Inside Man

Worst of 2006.

1. Date Movie ( My friends made me watch it... they are horrible people)
2. Little Man (throughout the movie i coulndt help but think how they ripped off a perfectly good bugs bunny cartoon)
3. Barnyard ( I cant be the only one tired of the endless CGI movies that 2006 has spawned)
4. Benchwarmers
5. Scary Movie 4

SCHOOL!!!

Weather i like or not... this is our last day of our summer vacation. No more staying up late and sleeping in. It went by so fast... every year seems to go by faster and faster, by the time i'm 40 the year will go by like a speeding train. I remember when i was in elemetary school, summer seemed to be alot longer than it is nowdays.

Atleast there's only one year of school left...unfortunately filled with math and science, even though ill probably end up not needing those courses for what i'll end up doing.

At this moment i'm planing on going in animation. Mixing both of my favorite passtimes movies and art. I can't wait till colege everything's going to be like a new adventure. It's like you only start your life after graduating.

MOVIE UPDATE...

Kill Bil vol. 2

The tone of Volume 2 is very different from the first one. While the first one was more of a stylistic almost satirical take on Japanese samurai movies of the 70s, Vol. 2 was trying to be more of a serious film focusing on the characters emotional state which suceeds at some level but i kept wanting more of what made Kill Bill 1 so special. For that i was a bit disapointed. Although the Pei Mai scene alone is worth watching the movie for.

GodFather

I finaly decided to rent the Godfather, boy was i in for a treat. Everything i heard about it was true, it really is a masterpeice. This is by far the best movie about organized crime, even though i haven't seen many mobster movie. It's even more than a movie about crime it's a movie about family.

The acting is great, the story is great, the music is great and the direction is great. What more could you ask for? What a cast, it features some of the best actors of it's time. There's scenes that stay with you when the movies over, and you don't forget them. I'll never forget the scene where the guy wakes up with his horse's head in his bed. Classic. The music is also iconic, it would probably rank in my favorite movie themes along with StarWars and 2001 A Space Odyssey.
Francis does an incredible job with this movies direction.

There is a reason why this movie ranks among the top of almost every list that's out there. If you were like me and you've never seen godfather, go rent it now.

Movie reviews

From now on, i'll try to review every film i see from this day on.

Starting with Akira Kurasawa's epic masterpeice, Seven Samurai.

I have been wanting to see this film for some time, after months looking for a copy i finlaly "aquired" it.There is no doupt that this film is a classic, it is one of those great epic films that stands the test of time.

Even after over 50s years, Seven Samurai does what most action films aren't able to achieve to this day, tell a whole story without feeling too long or boring. Even though the film is over 3 hours long it still manages to keep you in your seat and watching, even the "boring" non-action parts are fun to watch. The samurai don't even reach the village in danger until more than 30 minutes into the film, all that time being spent getting to know each of the characters and the motivation and history behind them.

Even today some still consider it to be the "The archetypal action film", because it set so many standards and inovated so much. Even though Kurosawa had a weak budget and poor equipment compared to his western counterpartsm his film still stands, that has to say something about the greatness of this movie.

If you ever get the chance to watch it, take it and enjoy it. After seeing Seven Samurai, I am ow looking foward in watching other Kurosawa films.
